The American Lawyer, in association with The Asian Lawyer, China Law & Practice and Legal Week, is inviting nominations for the fourth annual Asia Legal Awards, where the region's top lawyers, law firms, and in-house teams will gather to celebrate their most stellar achievements of the year.

Complex cross-border acquisitions, multi-jurisdictional disputes and the increasing need for innovative regulatory solutions with both local and global applicability all create a vibrant, demanding, and competitive—not to mention lucrative—legal environment here in Asia. In fact, data from The American Lawyer’s latest Asia 100 survey show that the 50 largest regionally-based law firms have increased their headcount by 65% since 2011—a rate that far outpaces the growth seen in The Global 100 (14%) or The Am Law 100 (8%) over the same period.

As Asia’s most renowned ceremony for the legal elite, The Asia Legal Awards honor the best work in the region. Across our coverage of practice areas and disciplines we intend to identify the biggest and most important commercial legal matters that involved lawyers and parties in Asia.

This contest will be open to all firms with offices in Asia. Winners will be revealed at a Gala Dinner held on Wednesday 22 February 2017 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Hong Kong.

We will focus on specific transactions themselves, and because global lawyering requires enormous efforts from many players, we want to credit all of those involved. Nine deals are up for grabs under the M&A, Securities, and Finance categories.

And as a nod to the region’s evolving markets and most sought-after areas of expertise, we are proud to unveil a much more comprehensive set of awards for 2017, now also covering Firms and Lawyers of the Year for Investment Funds, Compliance/Investigations, Competition, IP, Employment, Energy, and TMT.

Grand prizes include the International and Asian Law Firms and Leaders of the Year.

We will, in addition, be honouring six In-House Counsel of Distinction at the awards, with a new grand prize for the In-House Legal Department of the Year as well. We invite law firms to make submissions based on exceptional work undertaken by General Counsel and their teams in Asia.

Among the big winners in 2016 were South Korea’s Yulchon, which scooped the ultimate Asian Law Firm of the Year award, and Kirkland & Ellis, feted the International Law Firm of the Year. Those honoured for their excellence in leadership were Zhong Lun Law Firm’s Wu Peng in China and Robert Ashworth, Asia managing partner of Magic Circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

All decisions will be made by the editorial staff of The Asian Lawyer, The American Lawyer, China Law & Practice and Legal Week. ALM’s award-winning publications have long been known for their journalistic merit and absolute commitment to editorial independence and integrity. These awards will fall squarely in that tradition.
